WHERE THERE IS NO VISION, THE COUNTRY PERISHES

In the words of Theodore Hersburgh, “the very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision…” 21st century Nigeria epitomises the Biblical adage, “where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29.18). The specific challenge Nigeria faces is endemic corruption. Corrupt political leadership and a flawed election system deny 160 million Nigerians visionary leadership.

There are however, barriers that have inhibited the combat of corruption in Nigeria. Endemic corruption greases the political and institutional fabric throughout Nigeria. The size of brown envelopes, the stranglehold of politically protected groups and years of “this is the way things are done here” provide a culturally corrupt setting that passes for “the government” in Nigeria.

Lack of political will in exorcising the endemic political corruption and the flawed electoral process have paved the way for the inauguration of inexplicable legislature that prevents visionary leadership and is not committed to the country’s prosperity.

Contributing to a certain degree to the deterrence, is poor educational standards in Nigeria. It is estimated one-third of the school-aged population are not enrolled in school and most young adults are unemployable. The youths of nowadays, see politics as a means of making easy money and in most cases, these monies are through corrupt practices. Regrettably, these youths are the leaders of tomorrow.

NIGERIA – UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE (CONTINUE TO) FALL

Unity amongst people results in the achievement of vision whether noble or ignoble!

God recognised the power of unity / synergy when he had to confound the contrary vision of many who wanted to build the Tower of Babel. He had his own visionary agenda!

For example, Genesis 11:6 reads, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them."  God realized that people unified in purpose can accomplish unique feats.

In parallel, the strength of our national leaders is derived from our disunity and they use this reality as a manipulative tactic to encourage division (religion, tribe, zoning) between our people and thus enforce their power base. .

Remember, a handful of visionaries for change can generate the change process.

·         Imagine the outcomes if 50% of immigration scam victims march on the National Assembly
·         Imagine the national and internationally powerful message of a march on  government houses demanding jobs (for example: the job seeker participants related to the immigration scam numbering over 60,000 in Abuja, over 11,000 in Niger State, over 30,000 in River State, over 15,000 in Kano State, over 17, 000 in Benue State, over 5,000 In Cross River State, over 22,500 in Oyo State, over 6,000 in Bayelsa State and over 30,000 from Plateau State)
·         Imagine what the united power of our people would have achieved if the tactics of the government had not split our united purposes protesting against the removal of the fuel subsidy
·         Let us be encouraged by the global unity in energising the #bringbackourgirls movement (sadly, this effort too is being sectionalized to kowtow to influential partisanship)

Nigerians it is time to WALK the TALK … mobilise or fossilise!
